Working together to end homelessness

Emmaus Hull is working to set up the first Emmaus community in Hull and East Riding.

Plans have been developed for a purpose-built community building, called The Orchard, which will offer a home and meaningful work to up to 30 formerly homeless people, known as companions.

The community will be supported by a social enterprise, and plans for The Orchard include a café and retail space, selling second-hand furniture and goods.

This will be an addition to the existing Emmaus business, a shop on Newlands Avenue, which opened in 2011, selling recycled second-hand goods.

At the moment the shop is run by a combination of staff and volunteers, but eventually both businesses will provide work for the Emmaus Hull companions, giving them a sense of purpose and helping to restore self-esteem, which can be eroded when someone experiences homelessness.

Emmaus Hull is continuing to fundraise in order to make this community a reality. We know there are lots of people in the area who could benefit from our services and that we could make a real difference to their lives.
